“You have seen this athlete. She runs a personal best as a sophomore. She trains harder her junior year, and her performance plateaus. By senior year she is hurt, or burned out.”
The pivot: high school athletes have a limited budget of quality training. This system spends it efficiently: more time at a strictly controlled threshold effort, spread across the week so it never piles up.
Norwegian-Lite
The elite method, rebuilt for a school schedule.
The Ingebrigtsens’ system runs on double threshold days, lactate meters and 100-plus-mile weeks. None of that fits a teenager with a school day. The part that transfers is intensity control, and that’s what this plan is built on.
Two threshold days, one session each
Instead of two sessions on the same day, threshold work is spread across two practices a week with 48 hours between them, inside your normal practice structure.
Controlled by feel
The talk test is the primary tool: three to five words at a time with effort means threshold. Effort of 6 to 7 out of 10 and heart rate back it up. Your equipment cost is nothing.
Volume by level
Four athlete levels, so a freshman and a varsity senior never carry the same training load. Weekly volume scales with experience, from about 20 miles to 55 and up.
The full reasoning is in the free guide: the Norwegian Method for high school runners.

Questions
Frequently asked
Can high school runners use the Norwegian Method?
Not as elite athletes practice it. The real system needs a seven-to-eight-hour recovery window between sessions, lactate testing equipment and a massive aerobic base, and most high school athletes have none of the three. The principles adapt safely into Norwegian-Lite, which spreads threshold work across the week inside a normal practice schedule. That’s what this plan is.
Do I need a lactate meter?
No. Athletes learn to control threshold with the talk test (three to five words at a time with effort), a 1-to-10 effort scale and, if they have monitors, heart rate. If you prefer paces, the free LT1 and LT2 calculator turns a recent race into threshold paces.
Does the plan use double threshold days?
No. Threshold work happens on two separate days a week, one session each, with 48 hours between them. Double days don’t fit a school schedule or a teenage aerobic base.
Should I buy this or the 22-Week Season Blueprint?
If you want the threshold model for the season, this plan. If you want the summer base and the season planned to the day for three levels, the Blueprint. The comparison above shows the differences side by side.
Can I share it with my assistant coaches and athletes?
Yes. Your purchase covers your coaching staff and team, and the athlete sheets are built to be printed and handed out. Please don’t redistribute it outside your program.
