“The running world is witnessing a revolution in footwear technology with the introduction of “super shoes.” These high-tech, high impact shoes, often marketed as game-changers, boast the ability to enhance speed and improve performance. With the recent slew of record-breaking performances in high school, college and professional running, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that these shoes live up to the hype. Among super shoes, the Nike Vaporfly line has taken center stage, commanding attention for its proven benefits and a price tag that matches its cutting-edge design. But, the real question is do super shoes work for the average runner or just the elites? And, are they worth it?
Unveiling the Science behind Super Shoes
The magic of super shoes lies in their construction. They are primarily characterized by a combination of lightweight, compliant midsole foam and a rigid, curved carbon-fiber plate nestled within. Each of the individual components might not exhibit extraordinary traits, but collectively they seem to produce remarkable results, particularly in enhancing running economy.
A pivotal study (sponsored by Nike) in 2017 reported a notable 4 percent improvement in running economy among runners maintaining speeds ranging from 5:22 to 6:54 per mile. A subsequent independent study by Dustin Joubert in 2022, comparing various brands of super shoes, revealed a 2.7 percent enhancement specifically with the Nike Vaporfly at a pace of 6:00 per mile. Even at 2.7 percent, that’s the difference between a 5K finishing time of 18:38 and 18:09!
The Pace Predicament
As the pace decelerates, the benefits of these super shoes might dwindle. Joubert’s hypothesis, based on case studies conducted at slower speeds, suggests that the advantages diminish, especially for runners navigating slower terrains. The latest study conducted by Joubert and Geoff Burns expanded the exploration to include runners at notably slower paces, ranging from 8:03 to 9:40 mile pace. The findings indicated a marginal improvement in running economy for slower-paced runners—0.9 percent at 9:40 mile pace and 1.6 percent at 8:03 mile pace—contrasting the substantial gains witnessed at faster speeds. Indicating that for beginners and slower runners, the super shoe may not worth the investment.
The intricacies lie in the shoe’s design nuances. The midsole foam and carbon-fiber plate may not fully optimize their potential at slower speeds. Burns highlights that the diminishing compression and potential incongruity with the plate could contribute to this disparity. In other words, the faster running speed requires a more significant downward force on the carbon fiber plate which then returns the energy and increases the runners’ efficiency. Moreover, variations in runners’ physical attributes, particularly weight differences, could potentially yield different outcomes.
The Quest for Optimal Performance
The study’s revelations offer insights rather than absolutes. It implies that while super shoes may confer a notable advantage, especially for faster runners, the extent of their benefits might vary for individuals at slower paces. The choice of footwear becomes not just a matter of style, brand or trend but rather a decision based on one’s running pace and biomechanics. Beyond the physical enhancements, the psychological impact of these shoes cannot be dismissed. The perceived performance boost, even if subtle, might contribute to a runner’s confidence and mental fortitude. You must believe to achieve.
