Race Day Packing List for Runners

A comprehensive race-day packing checklist organized by category—uniform, footwear, nutrition, timing, and personal care—designed to eliminate pre-race anxiety and ensure athletes focus on mental performance rather than missing gear.

The hard training is done. The miles are in your legs. There’s nothing worse than arriving at the track or course and realizing you forgot your spikes, bib, or post-race fuel. Race morning should focus on your mental game—not frantically searching for safety pins.

Use this checklist to sleep well knowing you have everything needed to run your best.

🎽 Uniform & Gear

Don’t leave uniform decisions until morning. Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly.

  • Jersey / Singlet: Clean, dry, ready to go
  • Racing Shorts: Race day is NOT the day to try brand new gear. Use the pair you know doesn’t chafe or ride up
  • Socks: Fresh, lucky race-day pair, PLUS a completely separate dry pair to change into immediately after
  • Warm-up Gear: Layers are critical. Pack jacket and pants to stay warm before the gun and immediately after cooldown
  • Underlayers: Check the forecast. If freezing, pack tights or cold-gear underlayers

👟 Spikes & Footwear

Footwear is your most critical tool. Treat it with care. Put spikes in BEFORE you arrive at the race venue.

  • Racing Spikes: Do a physical check the night before. Ensure all spikes are present, sharp, and tightened securely
  • Spike Wrench: Throw it in your bag for last-minute trackside adjustments
  • Replacement Spikes: Always have backups (usually 1/4″ for XC or 1/8″–1/4″ for track, depending on surface rules)
  • Training Shoes: For warm-ups and cool-downs (you won’t want to wear racing spikes)
  • Slides/Sandals: Ultimate post-race comfort for tired feet

⏱️ Timing & Race Essentials

These tiny items often cause the biggest panic if forgotten.

  • Race Bib/Number: Pro-tip: If available, pin it onto your jersey the night before. Saves massive stress in the morning
  • Safety Pins: Bring 4+ extras. Someone on your team will inevitably need them
  • GPS Watch: Charge it TONIGHT. A dead watch is useless
  • Timing Chip: If separate from bib, attach it to racing shoes now

🍌 Nutrition & Hydration

Stick to what you know. Race day is NOT the time to experiment with new gels or foods.

  • Water Bottle: Fill it before you leave
  • Electrolytes: Bring your preferred mix (Nuun, Gatorade, etc.)—especially if it’s a hot day
  • Pre-Race Fuel: Pack easily digestible foods you know work for your stomach (banana, energy bar, plain toast)
  • Post-Race Recovery: The 30-minute window after finishing is crucial. Pack protein shake, chocolate milk, Gatorade, or Pedialyte to kickstart recovery immediately at the finish line

🎒 Personal Care & The “Oh $*%&” Bag

These items ensure comfort and keep unexpected situations from becoming embarrassments.

  • Anti-chafe Balm: BodyGlide or similar is essential. Apply before getting dressed
  • Hair Ties/Ribbons: Keep hair out of eyes and off neck. Team spirit!
  • Toilet Paper: Enough said
  • Sunscreen / Bug Spray: Depending on season and location
  • Phone, Charger & Earbuds: For the bus ride and pump-up playlists
  • Inhaler / Personal Meds: Double-check if you need these
  • Vaseline: For exceptionally cold or windy XC races, apply a thin layer to exposed skin (cheeks, nose, legs) to prevent windburn
  • Towel & Wet Bag: Bring a plastic or trash bag to isolate sweat-soaked or muddy gear from clean clothes
  • Cash: For concession stands or meet merchandise
  • Foam Roller: For post-race or pre-race recovery work

Pro Tip: The “Go Bag” Ritual

The night before the race, create a ritual:
1. Lay out your complete uniform
2. Pin your bib if available
3. Pack your bag exactly the same way every time
4. Review your checklist

This simple act signals to your brain that you’re prepared and in control. Anxiety thrives on uncertainty. By automating these decisions the night before, you free up mental energy for the race itself.
